Jephte
A show created by the Bread & Puppet Theater in 1974, revived in 2026.
Directed by Peter Schumann

Bread and Puppet presents “Jephte” , an outdoor performance set to an oratorio composed by Giacomo Carissimi in 1650. Jephte was created by Peter Schumann in 1974, and was performed only twice as part of the last Domestic Resurrection Circus at Cate Farm in Plainfield, Vermont. The show uses puppets, landscape, the stunning baroque music, and the harsh biblical story of Jepthe— the story of a general who sacrifices his daughter for military victory— as elements. More than a recreation of a 17th century oratorio, the show was a representation of the loss of the American soul in the Vietnam War.
